Intermediate Optimists
__This class is designed for kids who have completed the Beginner Sabot class and wish to build on their skills in the Optimist Dinghy. Students will learn new boat handling and sail trimming techniques. They will also learn more right-of-way rules and basic racing skills. Emphasis will be placed on proper boat handling and sail trimming, as well as proper use of the sailing rules. This is where the kids will be introduced to the fundamentals of sailboat racing, such as starting, upwind and downwind sailing, and mark rounding.
Prerequisite: Beginner Sabot
Next Step: Advanced Optimists
- Taught in Optimist Racing Sailboats, which are used locally, regionally and nationally at regattas
- Use your own Opti, or use a DRYC provided boat (See Charters)
- Students will learn upwind/downind sailing, starting sequences, mark rounding’s, rules, rigging, knot tying and general seamanship
- Towards the end of the session, sailors may choose to participate in local Green Fleet Regattas (Part of Southern California Youth Yacht Racing Association)
